The UN first took note of the environmental damage caused by sand mining after Awaaz Foundation's presentation at the Conference of Parties 11, Convention of Biodiversity. Awaaz Foundation's letter at SSBTA to include sand mining in the official Agenda of the CBD and Denis Delestrac's film "Sand Wars." Dr. Pascal Peduzzi the UNEP issued a global Advisory against sand mining in 2014 entitled "Sand:Rarer than one thinks" and Awaaz Foundation advocated to Mr. Eric Solheim that sand should be included in the global political agenda in 2016. Awaaz Foundation presented before the first Expert Roundtable on Sand and Sustainability of the GRID Geneva (of the United Nations Environment Programme) in October 2018. On 7th May 2019, UNEP Acting Director Joyce Msuya released the first Report on sand entitled "Sand and Sustainability: Finding new solutions for environmental governance of global sand resources" and provided a platform for Awaaz Foundation's work on sand mining and our campaign 'Save Our Sand” On 15th March 2019, the United Nations Environment Programme passed a Resolution on Mineral Resource Governance which took note of the Sand and Sustainability Report in which Awaaz Foundation was referenced throughout.
